Sure Sign I’ve Been in Utah TOO Long
So there I was reading Ad Age’s latest Search Marketing Fact Pack minding my own business.
And a logo jumped off the page.
Stop reading. Look at the logo. What do you see?

[did you stop reading and look at the logo?]
I saw The Orem … as in that city next to Provo.
Sorry Theorem. Maybe we “Utahans” are gonna see things others will not.
Why We Need Alternative Fuel Sources
Because OPEC and everyone in the supply chain are excited to see the price of oil go above a $100 a barrel and prices at the pump go up, up, up. We need an alternative.

MARKET ALERT
from The Wall Street Journal.Dec. 5, 2007
Oil prices leapt about $2 in London trading after OPEC ministers said they wouldn’t open petroleum spigots any wider, a move that was expected after a recent slide in prices relieved pressure on the cartel to pump more crude. Nymex light, sweet crude futures rose $1.93 to $90.25 a barrel and Brent was up $2.04 at $91.57 a barrel.FOR MORE INFORMATION, please see: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119684759072914322.html?mod=djemalert
Personal Memory: I documented that oil sold for over $70 a barrel for the first time in a post April 18, 2006.
Chainsaw Screams Highway to Hell
Amy and I attended the Billy Joel concert with a couple of friends in Salt Lake City on November 29th, 2007. Joel introduced roadie “Chainsaw” how was there to sing a special religious number as a guest appearance. At this point, the classic crunchy guitar sounds of Angus Young combined with Brian Johnon-like screams filled the air. And I might add, that this was the point in the show when it got really loud. Enjoy the show.
Sometimes, Blogs Reminds Me Why
I had to re-read my blog post on the iPhone. I had to remember why I took the phone back.
Now I remember. I’ll wait.
Although, it was nice to see that when I was playing with my wife’s iPhone last weekend, I noticed that the end a sentence and double space will insert a period. I think the spelling suggest/lookup on the iPhone is getting better.
When will Copy and Paste be there? I really want faster browsing with the FAT Safari mobile browser, so I need 3G. And that silly numeric vs. alpha keyboard.
I will wait.
Why Do Street Cleaners Operate in the Winter?
I was in Sandy at 106th area for lunch today. As I was parking, I saw a street cleaner coming up State Street.
My first thought was that it was a truck being moved for the winter. But then I saw those round brooms sweeping and working away. This was strange to me since the street had snow left over from the weekend storm that filled the gutter / edge of the curb and even went into the right lane of the road.
So was Sandy’s street cleaning budget way under forecast for 2007 and needing to burn some hours to keep the high water mark for 2008? Out for a test drive after repairs?
If you know or have ideas, I’d love some insight.
Fishing with Bridget on Thanksgiving Day
A friend of mine has a tradition of fishing on Thanksgiving. Sounded good to me. Fish in the morning and eat in the afternoon.
This year I tried to recruit the boys to go with me. They’d been in the “winter” and quickly passed. My oldest girl, however, was all go.
We fished just below the Deer Creek dam at the top of Provo Canyon. It was cold — I was cold. My little 11 year old girl froze her little fingers and toes off. But as you can see from the picture, she sure looked cute in the waders and boots. I was glad we caught a few fish to show for our efforts.

Don’t GIVE UP on Vista
Vista is the first operating system from Microsoft since Windows 98 that I did not use "before" it was officially released. To be honest, I’m feeling a little lost and not sure what I’m missing. I just might have to install it somewhere to play and experience it for myself.
In the mean time, the alternatives are throwing blows at Redmond’s new hope. This ad from Apple has appeared online at select tech publications. It’s a hard-core comic attack by Apple. As with all political wars, I wonder if badmouthing the competitor will come back to haunt Apple.
Bono, a Marketing Genius
First Steve Jobs and a U2 branded iPod loaded with the U2 collection. Now iLike and Amazon.com.
This time burning hot iLike (Bono is an investor through Elevation Partners) gets to present U2’s product to hundreds of thousands of listeners / watchers before it’s available. U2’s new Wave of Sorrow isn’t on the radio. It’s on the web — all over the web (even here below at bradbaldwin.com). iLike is encouraging and collecting prospect feedback to back to U2. This effort is in conjunction with the release of a DVD / Audio released of Joshua Tree at the end of November. And as they’ve done for thousands of authors — like J.K. Rowling with her Potter series, Amazon has a presale to gauge demand and reward the rabid fan with just in time product delivery.
Bono gets marketing and sales. He gets buzz. He gets matching his product to the distribution channel. He gets that his target market will appreciate his commentary to introduce the meaning of his lyric. He knows that he can drive massive awareness for causes where the West can share wealth with those less fortunate (in this case Ethiopia).
Very smart marketing and sales. A new model for the future of music and video sales.
My Proof of Global Warming
Sure all "old" people have a story about how deep the snow was when they were a kid. But do they have proof?
Here’s my proof. This is me when I was 6 or 7 years old. This photo was taken in 1972 seven miles West of Rexburg, Idaho where I grew up. That’s me standing on top of our car that was buried by a single night of snow and wind. I remember many of these great Snow Days as a kid.
