Bono, a Marketing Genius

First Steve Jobs and a U2 branded iPod loaded with the U2 collection. Now iLike and Amazon.com. This time burning hot iLike (Bono is an investor through Elevation Partners) gets to present U2’s product to hundreds of thousands of listeners / watchers before it’s available. U2’s new Wave of Sorrow isn’t on the radio. It’s […]

Is Microsoft Begging Students to Buy/Use Office

I was glad to have it compared to the typewriter, a bottle of whiteout, and lots of wasted paper…. That throws out the standard pricing models the rest of the software industry use to calculate value. And what’s included in this “Ultimate Package:” * Word * Excel * PowerPoint * Oulook (with Business Contact Manager) * Accounting Express * Publisher * Access * Infopath * Groove * OneNote Is this another sign that the monopolistic power in Redmond is nervous about Google’s and others web-based apps that allow today’s students to collaborate and work on any computer at any location on or off campus — or even on mobile devices like the iPhone?

Lego-Playing, Free-Dry Cleaning, Spoiled Google Employees

Fake Steve Jobs takes a stand on Google employees today.Funny thing is that there are many companies in the tech world with this same problem…. At some point, all these people who live off someone else’s money will realize that wealth and security come with revenue generating businesses. As for Google, wow do they generate revenue…. But They also have a cash cow that is pumping out the milk! They’re going to look like a bunch of spoiled coddled self-involved Lego-playing 20-somethings who have free massages and dry cleaning and groovy ethnic food and have been turned loose with no adult supervision to do whatever the [fbomb] they want, and who all are suffering from acute Attention Deficit Disorder so that they never finish anything because they get bored and move on to the next stupid idea that some bozo has dreamed up on a white board.

Couple of my Cell Phone Snapshots on Schmap

Snapped a couple of shots of the Carlton Oaks golf course in San Diego area…. Now they are on Scmap, some shopping / map application. Images were used with my permission.

Two out of 20 for 2006 / Ajax offline in 2007

I bought 2 of them: 1) Parallels — number three on the top 20, 2) RIM BlackBerry Pearl — number 17. The prediction for 2007 looks cool…. And if you’re not at “your” computer, you can still access and use the application and data.

Being part of something bigger than money

I realized today why I don’t understand the Open Source community as well as I should. I love money. It pays for my house. It gets me food when I’m hungry and want to drive through Wendy’s. It even helps straighten my kid’s teeth. However, money doesn’t motivate this younger generation of coders in the same way it did/does me.

WSJ reports NEGATIVE growth at Facebook and MySpace

And as I’ve predicted, it just doesn’t seem like this younger audience wants to be part of this scene once it’s determined the sites are “the thing.””Both MySpace and Facebook lost visitors in September, according to Nielsen/NetRatings, a Web-tracking service. The number of unique U.S. visitors at MySpace fell 4% to 47.2 million from 49.2 million in August, and the number of visitors to Facebook fell 12% to 7.8 million from 8.9 million.”Meanwhile, there’s the internal vs. external number debate:”Facebook spokeswoman Melanie Deitch says the Palo Alto, Calif., company’s own numbers show that the number of registered Facebook users rose 9% to 11 million in September, while the number of individual page views rose 40% to 16.5 billion.”Facebook’s adding adults and other audiences was a mistake–well maybe not the high school students.

Facebook adds new ways to summarize and notify what’s new

By adding the News Feed and Mini Feed features to Facebook, members can now see what’s been happening since they last logged in without spending lots of time browsing around…. In my research directly with students and the research coming from the 2005 ECAR Study of Students and Information Technology, key areas students expect technology to provide include: convenience, connection, and control.

Wiki.com more proof of a business build around open-source technology

Many of us have played with Wikis. If we haven’t played with one directly, then we’ve likely used one at Wikipedia.com. After reading the news today about Wiki.com, I think we’re seeing the real productization of technology developed in the open source community that will strike out at collaboration and content management systems like Microsoft […]
