Driving with a two-year-old screamer
Amy drove to Idaho to pick up Bridget from Grandma’s house. I found this funny clip on the camera of the kids enjoying the wind when the windows were down. Dallen filmed. Abby screamed. Jed and Bridget both added fuel to the fire. Just imagine all that screaming over a four hour drive! Bless Amy’s soul.
Very random thought on creativity: Teletubbies
Sorry. But as a friend told me once, having a child when your old keeps you young.

So today when I was watching Teletubbies with my two-year old daughter, I couldn’t help but think how amazingly creative Teletubbies is. I mean, how do you come up with this level of completely out-of-the-box thinking. Their names. Their home — it looks like something left behind by defense contractor and then made even worse by astro-turfing the place. Tubby custard. Tubby toast.
Perhaps a management offsite could pull some great ideas out of people after a 15 minute segment of Tinky Winky, Po, Dipsy and Laa-Laa.
Is emulation on Linux “saving” the Palm OS?
Tom Krazit, CNET news staff writer, shares an interview with Access executives. Access took on the task of breathing life into the Palm OS. Brave task few would have taken so late in the game. I wish them the best of luck.
As you can tell from my heading, I don’t have a lot of faith that Linux will save the Palm OS. Actually, I’ve always thought the end result will be an entirely new OS that will preserve the legacy of applications — for the sentimental lovers of a favorite Palm software that you just can’t replace. As pointed out by Dieter Diaz in the CNET interview, Access will rely on emulation and Moore’s Law in microchip advancements to keep the Palm OS alive.
How much of the Access Linux Platform will bring Palm OS components forward?
Diaz: A big portion, actually. We are including a version of Garnet (Palm OS v5.4, the most current version) emulated. The approach is there is an abstraction layer that had been designed for Garnet to sit on various types of hardware, and we are now connecting this abstraction layer to Linux. So we are very much similar to Java; we are creating a virtual machine of Garnet inside the Access Linux Platform. What will that do for the performance of Palm OS applications on the Access Linux Platform?
Diaz: We believe the performance will be good. Mostly it will be driven by the new processors that are available.
I’m bullish that we’ll see a great OS for the smartphone. If trends hold, it’s probably going to be Linux based its core.
Of course, if Nokia and the Symbian partners can find a way to offer the jump start they’ve to the open source and application development community, Symbian might be able to maintain it’s 50% market share lead.
Whatever happens, I’m not cheering for Windows!

Walt Mossberg covers Nokia E62…missing WiFi?
I see that Walt Mossberg from the Wall Street Journal just covered the Nokia E62. It looks exactly like the E61. I’m not sure if the 62 is just the US version? Or is it missing what Walt DIDN’T write about: support for WiFi (802.11g), SIP client, miniSD memory card.
“Nokia is being coy about the timing, pricing and wireless carrier for the E62. But I expect it to be available late next month from Cingular Wireless. And I expect it to cost even less than the Q, which at $199 is the least expensive product in this group. The latest Treo models, the 700p and 700w, are being sold by Verizon Wireless for $299 right now, after rebates.”

Post Publish NOTE: it appears that the E62 is the US model of the E61 and probably includes lots of Cingular-specific applications and restrictions. MiniSD yes. But, it doesn’t look like WiFi is part of the package — and why would it since Cingular would hate see customers routing calls over a WiFi connected SIP client at Starbucks.

Separation anxiety
My space heater MacBook is in a box and on its way to Houston for a much needed cooling system. Guess it’s back to this Windows machine for a while. It will be days before I can get my mind to CTRL+C/X/V/etc. instead of Command+C. Hurry home old friend!
The Dash Movie
I recently learned that a 45 year old friend passed away from a massive heart attack. He left a wife and six kids.
His wife sent me a nice movie today. Take a minute and put life in perspective as you watch this.
Palm going to the dark side…
Like many others, I saw the transition to Microsoft OS on the Palm “device” coming. Too bad that such a great smartphone has to end up driving the monopoly of Microsoft. Verizon is slow as cold tar to bring any device into the market (how long did it take for the Q?). Now it’s Sprint that will get the device on the CDMA network. And as for the Palm OS….well it looks like it’s on hold and maybe even completely off.
“Separately, another rumour is now that Palm has no plans at present to release ‘Unlocked’ GSM versions of either its Treo 700p or Treo 750p…”

Makes me even more happy that I bit the bullet and got the Nokia E61 — although I’m seriously questioning if the E70 would be better for me because I don’t think I can live without a camera in my phone.
It’s a shame that the consumer has to wait for these big companies to roll something out. I read that Steve Jobs hates the fact that he’ll have to cater to the carriers before a product could have the Apple brand. Steve, don’t give in! Please focus on a device that works independent of the carrier–better yet, make the carriers “beg” to sell your product. The right device can make it through your own channels (just pick GSM please :-))!
Football season…summer is over
I must be one of only a handful of men who find the return of football season as a downer. For me, this is sign that summer is over. It’s harder to find any sport event on TV that’s NOT football. That soon the leaves will be falling. That the grass will turn brown. That the snow will put a hold on golf.
I’ve got to get out there and PLAY!
