Is there more gold to mine in tech?

200910232335.jpgI’m not sure why I’m so mesmerized by Windows 7. Maybe it’s because I’m hopeful that Microsoft’s effort will once again drive lots of sales for the tech sector.

I know that this sounds strange and perhaps unbelievable coming from a Mac fanboy. Sure the iPhone has driven lots of new revenue. But it’s not like the old days. Lots of small–if not individual–development shops are making money. However, software is a “free” web site or downloaded from the Apple AppStore for hundreds of pennies, not hundreds of dollars.

The unemployment rate in Silicon Valley is near 12%. Tech investments are down. Fortune writer Adam Lashinsky reports that the biggest and brightest VCs are struggling to find a way to generate the returns of the 90’s, leaving the VC leaders like Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins to question if the “best days” are behind them. As I considered my start in tech in relationship to the rollercoaster returns over that past 17+ years, I’ve seen peaks and valleys.

I’m looking forward to another ride up!

Healthcare and biotech? It’s possible, but with all the uncertainty swirling around the government of “change,” it’s hard to predict. What about the Enterprise? I imagine that corporate IT will continue to push their investments long and longer. Software is more bloatware than ever before. Just implementing technology on the hope of increased productivity is not going to cut it.

I believe that mobile Internet will continue to drive new revenue. Alternative power has to be an area of growth. Finally the migration from traditional media and entertainment moving into a digital home is likely to drive an exchange of money from consumers pockets. These are the places that I’m watching.

And as for Windows 7? I’m encouraged by what I’m seeing.

I like this PC and Mac commercial

Windows 7 is far away better than XP. I’ve used the beta, RC, and the RTM version since January 2009. It’s starts up fast, goes to sleep fast, and appears pretty solid on the hibernate. My apps have run just fine. I’m moving my one Windows machine to the shipping version of Windows 7.

Even with all the Windows fanfare, I’m still happy to say that I have 4 Macs, 3 on Snow Leopard.

Finally, over the years I’ve seen the OS changes come and go. As an “old-timer” who remembers the power of cd, xcopy, and other robust OS commands, I was happy to see Windows come along. Amy was alway a Mac person–she’s always “thunk” different. I welcome Windows 7 to join the family.

I must admit that this latest commercial from Apple made me chuckle. Enjoy.

Tom and Fonzie are no more

Perhaps one of my all-time favorite Conan episodes. Please note, parental advisory for children under 12.

Bring on the snow

I’m officially ready for the snow.

The weather has been so great that I’ve been struggling to work inside all day. I’ve watched so many beautiful days from my desk that I worried I wouldn’t be able to transition to winter. That all changed today. On the golf course.

I went to Thanksgiving Point thinking I would play there. After waiting for an hour and not getting on, I decided to got to So. Mountain, my new favorite, but eat-my-lunch golf course. I checked in and was sent straight to the tee to meet with the Kim two-some. There I realized the day was going to be LONG.

The preshot routines included 5-6 swings, each with a big divot. Then there was the putting “practice swings.” we spend the day searching for golf balls The pace of play was so long it turned into a 5:45 round.

Needless to say, I knew it would be a patience test.

I failed. I tried to last. But as you can see from my card, I made it through the front nine but lost it on the back.

I’m so burned out of golf right now that I say let it snow.
